BICHHDE SABHI BAARI BAARI - RIP ABRAR ALVI

TIMES OF INDIA MUMBAI: Writer-director Abrar Alvi, Guru Dutt's `write hand man', passed away Wednesday night. The writer of several classics was, however, best known as the director of `Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam'. Eighty-two-year-old Alvi had severe diabetes and was bedridden for a year.

Alvi, a law graduate from Nagpur University, met Guru Dutt through his cousin who was a production assistant. Impressed by his mastery over Urdu, Guru Dutt invited him to join, and the result was a series of memorable films beginning with `Mr and Mrs 55', `Pyaasa,' `Kaghaz Ke Phool,' to Guru Dutt's last film, `Baharein Phir Bhi Aayengi'. He also wrote the laugh-riot `Professor' and the reincarnation drama `Jhuk Gaya Aasman' for director Lekh Tandon.

"Alvi was a finicky writer who sometimes took three days to fine-tune one line,'' laughs writer Javed Siddiqi, whose friendship with him spanned 33 years. "A man with a sharp, almost cynical sense of humour, he could stump you with his one-liners and his repartee. A friend of his once dropped by to see him because he was in the vicinity. Alvi looked quizzically at him and asked if he was the Qutub Minar, which one casually visited during a trip to Delhi.''

Alvi's last rites were performed at Oshiwara cemetery on Thursday. Few people from the film industry attended the funeral. As Siddiqi says, "The film world knows an artiste by his last hit and, in his case, that was a long time ago.'' He is survived by three sons and two daughters.
