Abu Dhabi Film Festival and Masdar Present Screening of Waste Land in Celebration of Earth Day
On April 22, the Abu Dhabi Film Festival and Masdar, a Mubadala Company, will celebrate Earth Day with a free public screening of the inspiring, Oscar-nominated documentary Waste Land directed by Lucy Walker. The screening will take place at CineStar, Marina Mall, Abu Dhabi at 7:00pm.
Waste Land, which played in the Abu Dhabi Film Festival in October 2010, has inspired viewers all over the world, winning numerous awards along the way. The film follows Brazilian artist Vik Muniz to a massive dump outside Rio de Janeiro where he creates breathtaking works of art in collaboration with people who collect recyclable materials to make a living.
Huda Al Shamsi, ADFF Director of Marketing & Sponsorship, said “The opportunity to partner with Masdar to bring this film to Abu Dhabi again marks an exciting addition to the festival’s year-round programming and one that is particularly important to our aim of using film to increase awareness about environmental issues. Waste Land is a powerful and uplifting film that emboldens us with the potential force of the creative process as an extraordinary tool for self-empowerment.”
Aida Al Busaidi, Manager – Planning and Online Communications at Masdar said, “Masdar is privileged to partner with the Abu Dhabi Film Festival once again. The theme of Waste Land revolvesaround people who collect recyclable materials to make a living, a message that is closely linked to Masdar’s mission of clean, renewable and sustainable technology that preserves the environment.
“Through our collaboration, we also extended Masdar’s outreach to educate the general public on the importance of recycling as a simple and doable tool for sustainable living. It is an ideal documentary to share the message of Earth Day and we are delighted to present this green work of art to viewers in Abu Dhabi.”

With its commitment to presenting works by Arab filmmakers in competition alongside those by major talents of world cinema, the Festival offers Abu Dhabi’s diverse and enthusiastic audiences a means of engaging with their own and others’ cultures through the art of cinema. At the same time, a strong focus on the bold new voices of Arab cinema connects with Abu Dhabi’s role as a burgeoning cultural capital in the region and marks the Festival as a place for the world to discover and gauge the pulse of recent Arab filmmaking.
